How to use the Compress PDF

  1. Drop a PDF.
  2. Choose how to compress it: keep the text, or re-render the pages for a smaller file.
  3. Compare the sizes and download the result only if it is worth keeping.

Two methods, and what each one costs

Tidy structure keeps everything as it is, including selectable text, but often saves little: images inside the file are not recompressed.

Re-render pages turns each page into a JPEG at the resolution you choose. It can shrink scanned documents a lot, but the result is image-based, so its text cannot be selected or searched. It can make a text-only PDF larger, and the tool tells you when that happens.

The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded to our server. When an administrator has installed Ghostscript, a third method recompresses images while keeping text; that one uploads the file for processing and deletes it automatically.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my file barely shrink?
Tidy structure does not touch the images, which are usually what takes up the space. Try Re-render pages if you do not need selectable text.
Which should I use for a scan?
Re-render pages at 150 DPI. A scan has no real text to lose.
Will the text still be selectable?
With Tidy structure, yes. With Re-render pages, no.
