How to use the Base64 Encoder/Decoder

  1. Choose Encode or Decode.
  2. Paste text, or drop a file to get a Base64 data URL.
  3. Copy the result or download the decoded file.

Base64 represents binary data with 64 printable characters, increasing size by about a third. Text is encoded as UTF-8 first, so accented letters and emoji round-trip correctly. The URL-safe variant (RFC 4648 §5) replaces + and / with - and _ and can omit padding. Base64 is an encoding, not encryption: anyone can decode it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Base64 secure?
No. It hides nothing; it only changes how data is represented.
Why does decoding fail?
The input may contain characters outside the Base64 alphabet, or be URL-safe Base64. Tick “URL-safe” and try again.
