How to use the Character Counter

  1. Paste or type your text.
  2. See characters with and without spaces, letters, digits, lines and UTF-8 bytes.
  3. Set a custom limit to see how many characters remain.

Why character counts differ

Different systems count differently. This tool counts user-perceived characters, so an emoji such as 👍🏽 counts as one character even though it is stored as several code units. The byte count shows the size of the text in UTF-8, which matters for databases and some APIs.

SMS messages use 160 characters per message in the GSM-7 alphabet, but only 70 when the message contains characters outside it, such as emoji. The SMS estimate takes this into account.

Frequently asked questions

Are spaces counted?
Both totals are shown: characters including spaces and characters excluding all whitespace.
Why does my emoji count as one character here but two elsewhere?
Some software counts UTF-16 code units. This counter groups them into the characters you actually see, using your browser’s text segmentation.
