About the word counter

The counter updates as you type and works for essays, articles, social posts and application forms with word limits. Words are sequences of letters or numbers separated by spaces or punctuation, so hyphenated words such as “well-known” count as one word, and numbers count as words.

Reading time assumes an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute and speaking time 150 words per minute. Both are estimates; technical text is read more slowly.

Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?
Any run of letters, digits, apostrophes or hyphens counts as a word. Punctuation and extra spaces are ignored, so “Hello, world!” counts as two words.
Does it work with languages other than English?
Yes for languages that separate words with spaces. For Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which do not use spaces, use the character count instead.
Is my text saved or uploaded?
No. Counting happens in your browser and nothing is sent to our server.
