How to use the Inflation Calculator

  1. Enter an amount, an annual inflation rate and a number of years.
  2. Choose future cost or present value.
  3. Read the result and the loss of purchasing power.

Future cost = amount × (1 + i)years; present value = amount ÷ (1 + i)years, where i is the average annual inflation rate as a decimal. Real inflation varies from year to year and between goods and services, so the result shows the effect of a constant average rate.
