A ratio is simplified by dividing all parts by their greatest common divisor (decimals are scaled to whole numbers first). A proportion A:B = C:D is solved by cross-multiplication: D = B × C ÷ A. Splitting an amount in the ratio a:b:c gives each part amount × part ÷ (a + b + c).
